Review Hazardous Attitudes at This Month's Safety Briefing!

We all love aviation movies, but they often overlook an important fact — the majority of accidents are not the result of freak weather or equipment failures, but instead pilot error. And that means pilots who understand risk management fly for years without accidents or incidents, and with a bare minimum of "never again" moments. At this month's Summer Safety Briefing, Willamette Aviation CFI Graham Lawson will discuss the Five Hazardous Attitudes that can lead pilots astray, with an emphasis on rapid recognition, as well as the effective use of "antidote" behaviors that will keep you and your passengers safe.

This month's Safety Briefing gets underway on Saturday, June 22 at 1100 hrs in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation, and it's eligible for FAA Wings credit. We'll also host a Community Potluck BBQ at 12 noon, with plenty of burgers and dogs for everyone. Drop by to get a look at the airplanes on our ramp, and please bring chips, a dish, or a dessert to share if you can.

Lend Your Support to ODART Disaster Relief!

The Oregon Disaster Airlift Response Team (ODART) will be conducting a training operation from June 8-15 in preparation for a Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquake. Willamette Aviation will serve as a critical hub for disaster relief in the event of a major quake, and we encourage everyone who is able to help to consider becoming a volunteer. Aircraft, pilots, and ground crew are needed for flight operations to Walla Walla, Wash., on June 8 to pick up supplies and bring them to our campus for storage. Volunteers also are needed for additional operations to evaluate road conditions and fly supplies to coastal airports. For more information, please visit odart.org.

Short Finals…

· We're delighted to welcome Angela Werner to our CFI Team at Willamette Aviation! Angela is a native Oregonian who grew up around dump trucks instead of airplanes. She went on her first discovery flight when she was 25 years old and got instantly hooked on aviation. She decided to change careers and become a professional pilot. After earning her Private Pilot Certificate in Oregon, she then relocated to a midwest college to major in Commercial Aviation while earning her Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, CFI, and CFII certificates and ratings. Since she did not grow up around aviation, Angela likes to immerse herself in the general aviation community by participating in various aviation clubs such as the EAA and the 99s. She owns a Cessna 150, which she uses to go on flying adventures, explore new airports, and volunteer as a Young Eagles pilot. Angela is excited to teach and help encourage people to reach their flying goals, whether they be recreational or professional.

· Looking ahead to next month, the Oregon Department of Aviation has announced that the Aurora State Airport (UAO) will experience several closures for a Surface Seal & Markings Project, beginning on Monday, July 8. During this time, the runway is expected to be closed for five days. At other times, access to the runway will be limited while work areas are active along the Alpha Taxiway. The project is expected to be complete by Friday, July 19th. However, additional closures are expected over the following weeks for final paint application. Please monitor NOTAMs as we approach the closure period for specific details and additional updates.
