Learn About Single Pilot Resource Management at This Month's Safety Briefing!

When operating as Pilot in Command, the outcome of every flight should never be in doubt. Solo pilots can't distribute various tasks among a crew, which creates unique challenges during single-pilot operations. At this month's Summer Safety Briefing, Willamette Aviation CFII Bob Wood will discuss Fulfilling PIC Responsibilities in a Single Pilot Environment, with a look at Single Pilot Crew Resource Management (SPCRM). The FAA introduced SPCRM for pilots flying as the sole occupant in small jets, but it applies to all aircraft with just one person aboard. Bob will review situational awareness and automation management, as well as Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) and how risk-management strategies can help pilots make sound decisions.

This month's Safety Briefing gets underway on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1100 hrs in the Education Hangar at Willamette Aviation, and it's eligible for FAA Wings credit. We'll also host a Community Potluck BBQ at 12 noon, with plenty of burgers and dogs for everyone. Drop by to get a look at the airplanes on our ramp, and please bring chips, a dish, or a dessert to share if you can.

Short Finals…

· Ry Prindle has joined our team of flight instructors at Willamette Aviation! Ry fell in love with aviation when he was very young, but he didn't think there was any way he could become a pilot. However, when he was 22 — and recently returned from a two-year teaching mission for his church — he decided to make flying his foremost goal. Training here in Oregon, he initially certified as a helicopter pilot. He then focused on flight instruction, earning his CFI certificate along with fixed-wing and multi-engine ratings. Many of our customers will know Ry from our maintenance shop — in addition to being an instructor, he's also an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) mechanic with Inspector Authorization (IA). "I am passionate about flying," Ry says, "but I'm also passionate about building community. Teaching is a way that I can foster competence and confidence in others."

· Our Private Pilot Ground School fall session gets underway this month — it's good value for student pilots, people who are getting ready to fly, and anyone who needs a refresher. The 40-hour, FAA-certified course is led by certified instructors and includes free attendance to any future private pilot course. Classes start on Saturday, Sept. 21, and run each Saturday for 12 weeks from 0800-1200. Tuition for the session is $649, while course materials are $269.95. Please contact us for more information or to sign up.
